At one o’clock the next day, I sat in the corner booth of the dining room at the Denver country club. The room was bright, filled with the murmur of lunch conversations and the clinking of heavy silver.
Nicole sat four tables away, near the glass doors that opened to the terrace. She was dressed in a beige suit, her hair perfectly styled, looking like the woman I had married twenty-one years ago.
A woman with short dark hair and a navy blazer sat opposite her, placing a leather portfolio on the white tablecloth.
Nicole did not touch her water glass. She reached into her purse, took out her phone, and placed it face down on the table next to her salad plate.
I watched her through the gap between two decorative palms, my iced tea sweating onto the napkin.
