“I do not want to look at your spreadsheets,” she said, her voice rising enough to make a student at the next table turn around.

“Just look at the dates,” I said. “They match the payments to the consulting firm that does not exist.”

“You are tracking her,” Mia said, her eyes flashing behind her lenses. She adjusted her glasses again, her finger tapping the bridge twice. “You are having your little army buddy run background checks on her because you cannot stand that she has her own life.”

“These are public records, Mia. The company in Phoenix was registered to her under her maiden name.”

“I am not going to let you drag Mom down just because you are losing your mind,” she said.

The words landed between us like a physical barrier.

“Mia, please,” I said, reaching across the table to touch her arm.

She pulled her sleeve back before my hand could reach her. “If you do this, if you keep trying to destroy her, I am not coming home for Christmas. I mean it, Dad.”
