She reached out and touched Mercer’s arm, her fingers resting on his sleeve. It was the same gesture she used when she wanted me to stop talking about the business at the dinner table.
“He is starting to look at the accounts,” she said.
The clock on the dashboard of the van clicked over to 9:30 PM. The red numbers cast a dim glow over the metal switches of the recording deck.
On the screen, Mercer walked to the wet bar and poured two inches of amber liquid into a short glass. He did not offer her any.
“The Cabo trip is off,” Nicole said, her voice rising slightly. “He told me tonight that the structural steel audit is going to take another three weeks.”
“We cannot wait three weeks,” Mercer said. He took a slow drink, his eyes fixed on the balcony window.
“He suggested we go in November instead,” Nicole said. “He was very calm about it, Julian. Too calm.”
Mercer set his glass down on the glass table. He took off his gold-rimmed glasses and began to clean them with the end of his silk tie, his fingers moving in small, tight circles.
