Nicole was standing by the kitchen island when I walked through the door at exactly five o’clock. She was holding a travel guide for Baja California, her thumb marking a page with a full-color photograph of a white sand beach and blue water.
“The resort called to confirm our airport shuttle,” she said, setting the booklet down on the granite counter. “They need our flight numbers by tomorrow morning.”
I set my briefcase on the bench near the door, taking care to keep my movements slow and deliberate. My left hand went to my bare wrist, my fingers rubbing the dry skin where my watch normally sat.

“The state department of labor is running a surprise audit on the RiNo project,” I said, using the flat, dry tone I used for zoning board disputes. “They flagged three of our framing subcontractors. If I am not in the office to sign the compliance affidavits, they will shut down the entire concrete pour on Tuesday.”
