“Tell her it was an administration fee for the trust,” Mercer said.

“I did,” Nicole said, her pen hovering over the paper. “But she is smarter than you think.”

“She is a sophomore,” Mercer said. “She is a useful shield. Nothing more.”

“If she keeps digging after the funeral,” Nicole said, “she could cause trouble with the probate lawyers.”

“She is collateral damage,” Nicole said. Her voice came through the headphones with a cold clarity that made me close my eyes.

“We will be in Switzerland before the estate even clears probate,” Nicole said on the tape.

She pressed the pen to the paper and signed her name at the bottom of the form.

Vance stood up straight, his head nearly touching the metal roof of the van. He tapped Miller on the shoulder.

“Get the backup disk,” Vance said. “We have enough.”

He turned to me, his hand resting on the latch of the van door.

“You stay here, Robert,” Vance said.

“No,” I said, reaching for my coat. “I am going up.”
