“You would have to be there,” Nicole said, turning back from the window.

“No,” Mercer said. “I have a scheduled surgery at Presbyterian St. Luke’s at eight. I will have six nurses who can swear to my location.”

“Then who?” Nicole asked.

“The scaffolding is fifty feet high,” Mercer said. “A loose board on the fourth platform is all it takes.”

He took another drink from his glass, his eyes dark on the gray screen.

“It is much simpler than the hospital,” Mercer said. “No medical board reviews an accidental fall on a commercial construction site.”

Nicole walked back to the sofa and sat down, her hands flat on her knees.

“The police will ask questions,” Nicole said.

“Let them,” Mercer said. “The policy is active. The premium was paid on the first of the month.”

On the monitor, Mercer walked to a small mahogany desk in the corner of the room. He unlocked the top drawer with a small key from his pocket.
