Nicole was standing near the nurse’s station, her shoulder almost touching Dr. Mercer’s lab coat.

Mercer was cleaning his glasses with his silk tie, his head tilted as he spoke to her in a voice too low to carry through the glass. He reached into his side pocket, drew out a thin slip of paper, and tapped it against his palm before sliding it into her open purse. Nicole closed the brass clasp with a sharp, metallic snap.

She turned toward the restroom, and I stepped back from the glass, turning on the cold water faucet to mask the sound.

A glossy tri-fold brochure for the Mercer Surgical Group sat on the granite island, right next to the fruit bowl.

I picked it up, turning it over in the soft light of the under-cabinet LEDs. On the back panel, written in Nicole’s neat, slanted handwriting, were three columns of numbers and a single, underlined phrase.
