“The risk is yours,” Vance said, taking the toothpick out of his mouth. “But right now, your wife has forty-two percent of your company’s shares in a trust.”

“Forty-two,” I said.

“And she has a power of attorney that kicks in if you are incapacitated,” Brandon added, his voice flat.

I looked down at the grease shining on Vance’s plate.

“If I agree to this, how long do you need?” I asked.

“Three days to set up the monitoring on your corporate server,” Vance said. “We will watch every transaction in real-time.”

“And my personal accounts?” I asked.

“Those too,” Vance said. “We need to see if she is moving cash out of your joint household funds.”

I took a slow breath, the smell of the diner’s griddle suddenly making me feel slightly lightheaded.

“Do it,” I said.

Vance nodded, then reached for his fork again.

“Go home, Robert,” Brandon said. “Act like nothing is wrong. We will handle the paperwork from our office.”

I left them there in the booth, the bell above the diner door jingling as I stepped out into the cold morning air.
