“Marilyn,” I said, trying to recall the name.
“My friend from the country club,” she said. “We talked about it last week, remember?”
“Right,” I said, though I had no recollection of any such conversation. “When are you leaving?”
“Tomorrow evening, around six,” she said. “The traffic on I-70 should be lighter by then.”
I heard a faint rustling on her end of the line, like paper being folded.
“I will see you tonight then,” I said.
“Don’t work too hard,” she said, and then the line went dead.
I sat there for several minutes, my fingers resting on the edge of the mahogany desk.
At four o’clock, Brandon came into my office, shutting the door behind him with a quiet click.
“Vance’s team is in,” Brandon said. “They already flagged two transfers from our payroll account.”
“To where?” I asked.
“A payroll processing service called Alpine Consulting,” Brandon said. “Only we do not use Alpine Consulting.”
“Who signed the authorization?” I asked.
“Your digital signature was used,” Brandon said. “But the IP address for the approval came from your home computer in Cherry Creek.”
