“Perhaps we can clarify them right now so Avery can complete the transaction tonight,” she said.

“I am sure it is just a simple misunderstanding,” she added.

“It is a matter of security,” I said, looking across the table at her.

“A house security breach that occurred on Friday night, to be precise,” I said.

Michael looked up, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“A security breach?” Michael asked.

“Did someone try to break in, Mom?” he asked.

“Did they steal something from the safe?” Michael asked.

“Someone did not need to break in, Michael,” I said.

“They had an electronic key card,” I added.

I reached into my pocket and withdrew the blue ink note that had been left on my nightstand the morning my head was shaved.

I laid it flat on the mahogany table, directly between Victoria’s plate and mine.

“Do you recognize this handwriting, Victoria?” I asked, my voice calm and precise.

Victoria glanced down at the paper, her eyes narrowing for a fraction of a second before her sweet expression returned.

“It looks like standard cursive,” Victoria said.
