“Inside,” she whispered, stepping past me into the warmth of the hallway.
We walked up to my dressing room without speaking a word. She set the black case on the vanity table and unzipped it, the metallic slide sounding loud in the small room. Inside lay three wooden blocks, each holding a different wig of thick, hand-knotted hair.
“I brought the silver-grey mix,” Lucia said, her voice dropping to a low whisper. “The lace front is already trimmed to your hairline.”
I untied the scarf and let it fall to the carpet.
Lucia did not gasp, nor did she reach out to touch my raw scalp with pity. She simply tapped her scissors against her knuckles, her face hardening as she leaned in to inspect the clean, circular patches where my hair had been sheared to the skin.
“This was done with a professional grade clipper,” Lucia said, her fingers moving lightly along my crown. “A number one guard. They wanted it close, but they did not want to cut the skin.”
