“Her lawyers have already contacted the cooperative board of the Broad Street commercial building,” Avery said. “They are contesting the management rights. They have filed an injunction to freeze the seasonal leasing accounts, claiming Michael is a partner with immediate equity.”

I leaned back in the leather chair, the wood creaking slightly. “Michael does not have a single dollar of equity in Broad Street. That building was purchased by my grandfather in nineteen fifty-two, and it has remained in the family holding company ever since.”

“He signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding last November when you gave him the vice presidency,” Avery said. He reached into his desk drawer, sliding it open with a metallic rattle that seemed too loud in the carpeted room. He took out his gray silk cloth. “Victoria’s name is on the joint bank account he linked to it. She is arguing that the memorandum constitutes a transfer of partial ownership.”

“It was a draft,” I said. “It was never ratified by the board.”
