“Michael will hate me,” I said, my voice shaking slightly before I caught it.

“Michael is angry because he has been caught,” Avery said. “But he will survive. He has his father’s trust fund from his maternal grandfather. It is only four hundred thousand dollars, but it is enough to live on if he is careful.”

“Victoria will not stay with him for four hundred thousand dollars,” I said.

“No,” Avery agreed. “She will not.”

“We found something else while tracing the accounts,” Avery said, sliding a smaller manila folder from beneath the estate binder. “Michael had two credit lines with outstanding balances in excess of eighty thousand dollars each. And he took out a private commercial loan from a firm in Rhode Island last summer.”
