Boston Mother Cancels Twenty Two Million Dollar Wedding Gift After Morning Betrayal

The news did not shock me, but it settled behind my ribs like a physical weight. “He is helping her,” I said.

“We do not know that for certain,” Avery said. “He might simply be trying to salvage the situation.”

“He is standing by while she cuts my business to pieces,” I said. “He is complicit.”

Avery did not contradict me. He merely adjusted the folders on his desk, aligning them with the edge of the leather blotter.

At three in the afternoon, we moved into the larger conference room where the light from the harbor was broader but colder. Avery’s assistant brought in a fresh stack of papers, her face pale and her eyes avoiding mine as she set them on the table.

“This came through the courier from the Boston Daily Ledger,” Avery said, setting a red folder on the mahogany table.

“What is it?” I asked.

“An inquiry from a reporter named Sarah Finch,” Avery said. “She is asking for a statement regarding your health.”

I stared at him. “My health? My health is perfectly fine.”
