“Let them ask,” I said, leaning against the mahogany bookshelf. “We are going to give them a different story.”
Avery took off his glasses and began to clean them with a small silk cloth, his movements slow and deliberate.
“What are you planning?”
“I want you to call Michael,” I said, looking at the empty fireplace. “Tell them we will settle the trust paperwork over dinner tomorrow.”
Avery stopped cleaning his glasses, his hand freezing mid-motion as he stared at me.
“You want to bring them here?”
“Yes,” I said. “All of them.”
“Including Victoria’s brother?” Avery asked, his voice dropping an octave.
“Especially him,” I said. “Tell them I have reviewed the documents and I am ready to sign the transfer of the twenty-two million.”
Avery slowly put his glasses back on, his eyes searching my face for any sign of hesitation.
“They will think they have won, Beatrice. They will think the pressure worked.”
“That is precisely what I want them to think,” I said. “If they believe I am signing the papers, they will not hesitate to come. They will want to be in the room to make sure the ink is wet.”
