“And if they bring their own attorney?” Avery asked.

“They won’t,” I said. “They are too greedy to share the credit with anyone else. Victoria will want to hold the document herself.”

“What about Michael?” Avery asked. “He has been calling my office all morning. He sounds desperate, Beatrice. He says his creditors are threatening to go public with his debts if he does not show proof of the transfer by Thursday.”

“Let him be desperate,” I said. “His desperation will make him more believable when he tells Victoria that I have surrendered.”

“He will think you have forgiven him,” Avery said softly.

“He will think what is convenient for him to think,” I said.

Avery stood up, his leather briefcase remaining unopened on the floor near the door.

“I will make the call from my car,” he said.

“Make sure you emphasize that the meeting is private,” I said. “No press, no outside advisors. Just family and my personal counsel.”

“They will agree to anything if they think the money is coming,” Avery said.
