“Why didn’t he tell me?” I asked, staring at the numbers on the printout.
“He knew you would demand to see his books before you cleared the debt,” Avery said. “He knew you would want to control how he managed his office.”
“I would have helped him,” I said, my voice dropping.
“Only on your terms, Beatrice,” Avery said, his voice gentle but completely honest. “And Victoria offered him a way out that didn’t involve your terms. She told him the twenty-two million was his by right.”
“And he believed her,” I said.
“He wanted to believe her,” Avery said. “It was easier than admitting he couldn’t run the division without your capital.”
“If you leave him on the documents, Victoria will eventually control every dollar,” Avery continued, pointing back to the draft. “Her brother has already proven what they are willing to do to get it.”
I looked at the black ink of the draft exclusion clause. The letters were clean and sharp, typed on heavy cream paper.
“If I sign this, Michael will have to rely on whatever income he can generate himself,” I said. “He has never had to do that.”
