Boston Mother Cancels Twenty Two Million Dollar Wedding Gift After Morning Betrayal

The mention of his father felt like a physical weight in the quiet room, a deliberate attempt to use a dead man’s memory to pry open my bank accounts. It cost me a sharp, cold pang of realization to see my own son use his father’s ghost to negotiate for twenty-two million dollars.

“Your father was a very sentimental man,” I said.

“I just want us to be a family again, mom, like we used to be,” he said.

He reached into his breast pocket for his leather card case, and as he did, a small piece of folded paper fell out of his pocket. It fluttered to the Persian rug, landing near the claw foot of his chair.

“You dropped something,” I said.

He bent down quickly, his fingers brushing the wool fibers as he snatched the paper. Before he could shove it back into his pocket, I saw the distinctive green logo of Bistro du Midi, a French restaurant near the public garden.

The date printed at the top of the receipt was Friday, the afternoon before the wedding, at two o’clock.
