“A surprise,” I said, the word tasting like copper in my mouth.

“He also asked if your security system had a backup generator,” Lucia said, closing her leather case with a sharp snap.

The sound echoed through the quiet kitchen, flat and final.

“I need to make a phone call,” I said.

Lucia picked up her case and walked toward the hallway, her boots clicking softly on the hardwood floor.

“Be careful, Beatrice,” she said, pausing near the door. “They are not just looking for the money anymore.”

“I know,” I said.

At noon, Avery arrived at my townhouse, his heavy leather briefcase under his arm.

He looked tired, his glasses resting slightly crooked on his nose as he walked into my study and set his coat on the green armchair.

“The rumors are still spreading, Beatrice,” Avery said, sitting behind the small writing desk. “Two local editors have called my office asking if you are planning to step down from the firm. They claim to have a source saying you have been missing meetings due to a sudden medical emergency.”
