Mr. Vance plugged a blue cable into the data port of the security box. His fingers moved quickly over his laptop keyboard, the clacking of the keys the only sound in the kitchen.

I stood near the marble island, watching the reflections of the screen flicker across the dark window. “Is it possible to alter the logs?”

“Not without leaving a digital footprint,” Mr. Vance said. “Every attempt to delete or edit the history is recorded on a secondary chip.”

Avery stood near the doorway, his hands in his pockets. “And if the card belonged to a member of the household staff?”

“My housekeeper has been with me for twelve years, and my driver has his own cottage in Brookline,” I said. “Neither of them has access to the master bedroom.”

“But Michael does,” Avery said quietly.

I did not answer him, keeping my eyes fixed on the green light of the security panel.

While Mr. Vance worked, Avery went to the stove and looked at the kettle. “I can brew a fresh pot of tea, Beatrice.”
