Boston Mother Cancels Twenty Two Million Dollar Wedding Gift After Morning Betrayal
It was a receipt from Bistro du Midi on Boylston Street, dated the Tuesday before the wedding.
“Michael told me he was working late at his office that night,” I said, pointing to the timestamp at the bottom of the slip. “He said he had a sandwich at his desk.”
Lucia picked up the paper, her eyes narrowing as she studied the faded print.
“He was not at his desk,” Lucia said, lowering her voice to a low whisper. “Your daughter-in-law’s brother was bragging about this very dinner at the salon on Friday afternoon while he was waiting for Victoria.”
“What did he say, Lucia?”
“He asked our receptionist if you still took your morning walks at half past six,” Lucia said, setting the receipt back on the marble.
My hand went to my collarbone, my spine straightening against the back of the stool.
“He wanted to be certain of my routine,” I said.
“He knew exactly when the house would be quiet,” Lucia said. “He told the receptionist that he was planning a surprise for his sister’s new family, and he laughed when he said it.”
