Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend

“She can leave,” Margret said, pointing to the door. “But you have a choice to make before you step out of this office, Richard.”

“I do not have to listen to this,” Richard said, reaching for the door handle.

“If you walk out that door, James will deliver this file to the district attorney’s office,” Margret said. “The financial fraud alone carries a five-year minimum.”

Richard froze, his hand resting on the brass handle of the locked door.

Monica looked at him, her eyes wide with a sudden, sharp fear as she realized what the blue folder meant for her own future.

“Richard?” Monica whispered.

He did not look at her. He kept his back to the room, his shoulders tense under his tailored jacket.

“What are the terms?” Richard asked, his voice barely audible over the sound of the rain outside.

Margret pulled a final set of papers from her desk drawer and placed them in the center of the table, right next to the blue baby blanket in the photograph.

Their faces turned the color of dry paper in the fluorescent light.
