Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend

I stared at the glowing screen of the phone, my hands flat on my lap so Richard could not see them shake.

“I am fine, Monica,” I said, keeping my voice as cold as ice. “I am simply waiting for my attorney to review the documents.”

“Margret Chen is retired in all but name, sweetie,” Monica said, her tone dripping with the kind of soft sympathy that makes you feel like an invalid. “We just want you to be safe. You have been through so much loss. Nobody expects you to carry all this financial weight by yourself.”

“Who is we, Monica?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Your family, Laura,” Monica said, and I could picture her touching her collarbone, her old defensive gesture. “Me, Richard, everyone who loves you. We do not want to see you slide back into that dark place again. The clinic in Woodinville was so good for you.”

“The clinic,” I said.

“They have a wonderful outpatient program,” Monica continued, her voice trailing off softly. “Richard and I were just talking about how much it helped you find your footing last year.”
