Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend

The same red box appeared, followed by a small grey notice that the account had been restricted by the primary cardholder.

I picked up my phone and dialed the customer service number on the back of the blue plastic card.

The representative had a polite, distant voice that sounded like she was speaking from inside a metal box.

“There is a temporary legal administrative hold placed on both accounts, Mrs. Vance,” she said.

“A legal hold by whom?” I asked.

“By the primary owner, Richard Vance, through his legal representation,” she said.

The phone felt heavy in my hand as I set it face down on the granite counter.

I logged into our online portal and checked the secondary joint account, the one where my landscape design fees were deposited.

The word restricted was written in bright red next to the balance.

I opened my leather wallet and counted the bills inside. I had exactly seventy-four dollars in cash.

The house was completely silent, the rain drumming a steady beat against the kitchen window.

I grabbed my keys, walked out to the Volvo, and drove downtown through the grey curtain of the morning rush hour.
