He smiled, the fine lines around his eyes crinkling in a way that had once made me feel completely safe. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the white linen tablecloth, his silver watch glinting under the low chandelier.
“I know things have been difficult since the summer,” he said, keeping his voice low and confidential. “But we are still here, and that is what matters.”
The waiter arrived with two glasses of champagne, the bubbles rising fast in the crystal. Richard raised his glass, his eyes holding mine with a steady, practiced warmth.

I took a tiny sip, the alcohol sharp and dry against my tongue. Richard drank half his glass, then set it down and checked his silver watch.
“The reservation was hard to get on a Friday, but I wanted tonight to be perfect,” he said.
