Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend

James did not wait for Richard to comply. He sat at the end of the table and placed a small black digital recorder between Monica and Richard.

When James pressed the play button, the quiet hum of a Volvo dashboard filled the room, followed by the sound of rain falling against a windshield. Then, Richard’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and clear, speaking over the Bluetooth line.

“I almost slipped and called her by your name again,” Richard’s recorded voice said.

Monica’s recorded laugh followed, a soft, trailing lilt that filled the lawyer’s office and seemed to freeze the air inside it.

“We just have to wait until November fifteenth,” Richard’s voice continued on the tape. “Once the five million clears, we can set up the trust for the baby and leave.”

James pressed the stop button. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of Monica’s coat rustling as she pulled it tighter around her shoulders.

“That is a private recording,” Richard said, his face tightening as he looked at James. “It is legally inadmissible, and you know it.”
