Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
Three hours after my call with James, the valet at the Queen Anne Bistro took the keys to our Volvo.
Richard was already out of the car, holding a large black umbrella over the passenger side before the young man could reach for the door handle. He offered his hand, his silver watch catching the yellow glow of the streetlamp in the damp evening air.
“Watch your step, sweetheart,” he said, his voice smooth and warm.
I took his hand, the leather of his glove dry and firm against my palm. I twisted my gold wedding band with my thumb inside my own coat pocket, the metal biting slightly into my skin as we walked up the stone steps.
The restaurant smelled of expensive red wine, charred rosemary, and the faint, sweet scent of melting candle wax. The host, a tall man in a dark tailored suit, recognized Richard immediately and led us to a corner booth in the back, away from the hum of the main dining room.
“Happy anniversary, Laura,” Richard said, sliding in opposite me.
“Happy anniversary,” I said, keeping my voice level.
