Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
“You wanted a medical record,” I said, looking at Richard’s silver watch as his wrist began to twitch. “You wanted to prove I was mentally unfit so you could invalidate our prenuptial agreement.”
“I was trying to help you, Laura,” Richard said, his voice dropping into his persuasive real estate tone, though his eyes looked frantic. “You were in a dark place. The counselor was for your own good.”
“The counselor was paid to write reports that supported your custody and financial claims,” James said, sliding a copy of a cashier’s check across the table. “Ten thousand dollars, paid from a secondary account under Monica’s name.”
Monica looked at the check, then at Richard, her lilt completely gone. “You said she would never find that account.”
“Be quiet, Monica,” Richard snapped, his face turning a dark, mottled red.
“Do not speak to her like that,” I said.
“Laura, you have to understand,” Monica said, her voice shaking as she reached across the table toward my hand. “I did not want to hurt you. Richard said the money was rightfully his because of how much he did for your family.”
