He took a step closer, his eyes scanning my face for any sign of resistance. “I am only trying to help you. If we transfer the management of the five million dollars to my firm’s account, we can stop all of this legal nonsense. You won’t have to go to court. You won’t have to listen to doctors talking about your mental state.”

I looked at him, noting the small, neat knot of his silk tie and the smell of his expensive cologne. He looked exactly like the man who had held my hand in the hospital corridor three years ago, promising me we would get through the loss together. Now, I knew he had been drafting emails to his lawyer from the bedside.

“I think you are right, Richard,” I said, keeping my voice low and slightly breathy, letting a tremor of false exhaustion slip into my tone.

He stopped mid-sentence, his mouth slightly open. He checked his watch, a quick, habitual flick of his wrist.

“What did you say?” he asked.
