Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
“Tomorrow?” he asked, his eyes narrowing slightly in calculation. “Can she have the paperwork ready by then?”
“She said she could,” I said, nodding slowly. “But I told her I wanted it to be a clean break. I want everyone there so we can finish this without any more delays. I want Monica there too.”
Richard’s grip on my hands tightened for a fraction of a second, then relaxed. His eyes darted toward his laptop.
“Monica?” he asked, his voice rising slightly. “Why would we need Monica at a legal signing?”
“She is my oldest friend,” I said, looking at him with a soft, pleading expression. “She has been so worried about my health, and she is going through so much with her own pregnancy. I want her to see that we are going to be okay. I want her to know our family is secure.”
He searched my face, looking for any trace of suspicion. He saw only a tired, submissive woman who had finally broken under his pressure.
“If it makes you happy, Laura, of course,” he said, his voice regaining its smooth, persuasive lilt. “I will call her and tell her to meet us there.”
