Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
I answered on the first ring, my voice barely a whisper.
“Laura,” James Rivera’s gravelly voice came through the line.
“What did you find, James?” I asked.
“The secondary account belongs to Monica,” James said.
The bedroom was quiet, the only sound the hum of the heater in the hallway.
“Monica’s personal account,” I said.
“Yes,” James said.
“And the forty-one thousand dollars?” I asked.
“It came directly from your joint savings,” James said.
“Is there any way to get it back?” I asked.
“Not without a court order,” James said.
I sat down on the edge of the unmade bed, looking at the grey light filtering through the curtains.
“Who signed the authorization for the nursery furniture delivery?” I asked.
“I am still waiting on the merchant to release the signature card,” James said.
“But we have the account details,” I said.
“We do,” James said.
“Thank you, James,” I said.
“I will speak to Margret now,” James said.
He hung up, and the line went dead.
I held the phone against my collarbone, closing my eyes.
For the first time in weeks, the air in my lungs did not feel like ash.
