Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
Richard returned a minute later, checking his silver watch as he slid back into the booth. “The main courses are coming,” he said, looking at me with that same warm smile.
“Good,” I said.
“Are you alright, Laura?” he asked, leaning in. “You look like you have seen a ghost.”
“Just thinking about the house,” I said, keeping my voice quiet.
“We will take care of the house,” he said, his hand finding mine again. “We will take care of everything.”
The waiter arrived with the plates, the steam rising between us, but I could only look at the gold necklace reflecting the light on my chest.
We ate in a quiet that felt different now, a silence that I filled with the math of forty-one thousand dollars and a delivery truck.
“How is Monica doing?” I asked, keeping my tone casual as I moved a piece of cod around my plate.
Richard paused, his fork halfway to his mouth. “She is fine, I suppose. I haven’t spoken to her in a few days.”
“She seemed stressed when I saw her,” I said.
