Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
He was already tapping the screen, his thumb moving with a quick, practiced speed. He set the phone on the black granite between us and hit the speaker button.
The line rang twice, the sound loud and tinny in the quiet room, before her voice came through, soft and trailing at the end.
“Richard? Is everything okay?”
“I am here with Laura, Monica,” Richard said, his voice instantly warm. “We are trying to finalize the trust paperwork so we can secure the Bellevue project, but she is having a difficult evening. I wanted to see if you could help me reassure her.”
There was a short pause on the other end of the line, the sound of a television playing low in her apartment, a soft murmur of a commercial in the background.
“Oh, Laura,” Monica said, her voice dropping into a gentle, pitying lilt that made me want to pull my hands off the table. “Are you feeling overwhelmed again? You know what the doctor said about keeping your stress levels down, especially after what happened in the spring.”
