Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
His phone, sitting face up on the table near his water glass, suddenly vibrated. The screen lit up with a brief banner notification.
Richard instantly reached out and flipped the phone face down, his movements so fast he almost knocked over his water glass. He cleared his throat, his smile returning a second later.
“Just work,” he said, waving his hand. “The commercial market never sleeps, even on a Friday night.”
“You should answer it if it is important,” I said.
“Nothing is more important than tonight,” he said.
He picked up his wine glass, but his eyes lingered on the back of his phone for a split second.
“I am glad we are doing this,” he said, his voice returning to its smooth, practiced lilt. “We needed a night to just be husband and wife.”
“We did,” I said.
“I am going to use the restroom before our main courses arrive,” he said, pushing his chair back. “I will be right back.”
I watched him walk down the narrow hallway toward the back of the restaurant, his shoulders broad and straight in his tailored jacket.
