Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
He reached into his breast pocket again and pulled out a small, rectangular box wrapped in gold foil. He slid it across the table, his silver watch catching the candlelight again.
“This is for you,” he said.
I picked up the box, the paper crisp under my fingers. I carefully peeled back the tape, trying to keep my hands from shaking.
Inside the box was a heavy black velvet case. I opened it to find a delicate gold necklace, the chain so fine it looked like a thread of light.
“To fifteen years of absolute devotion, Laura,” he said.
He stood up and walked around the table, stepping close behind my shoulder. I could smell his cologne, the sharp scent of cedar and citrus.
“Let me put it on you,” he whispered.
I pulled my hair to one side, my skin prickling as his cool fingers touched the back of my neck. He fastened the clasp, his hands lingering on my shoulder for a second too long.
“There,” he said, returning to his seat. “It looks beautiful on you.”
“It is very fine,” I said, touching the metal at my throat.
