Four Minute Phone Call Exposed My Husband and My Best Friend
Richard leaned forward, his finger hovering over the end-call button, his face impassive.
“Monica is right, Laura,” he said, his fast words finally revealing the outline of a shape I had not seen before. “You need to focus on your recovery. I spoke with a legal specialist this morning, a man named Henderson, who handles these kinds of transition trusts.”
“Who is Henderson?” I asked.
“He is an attorney who specializes in trust preservation,” Richard said quickly, pressing the red button to cut Monica’s line off before she could say more. “He suggested we look into a structured medical guardianship if the anxiety continues to interfere with your decision-making.”
The kitchen felt incredibly quiet now, the hum of the refrigerator the only sound left in the room.
“A medical guardianship,” I repeated, the syllables heavy and foreign on my tongue.
“Only as a temporary measure,” Richard said, his eyes scanning my face for any sign of surrender. “To protect the estate while you get the help you need. I think it is time you went back to the clinic, Laura. Just for a few weeks.”
