“Well, I think it looks peaceful,” I said, stepping back so she could enter the small room.
She walked to the vanity and picked up the ivory brush, her thin fingers wrapping around the handle.
She looked at her reflection in the gold-framed mirror, her eyes moving slowly over the lines of her face.
“Clara, would you do something for me before you leave,” she asked, holding the brush out toward me.
I took the handle from her hand, the old ivory feeling cool and heavy against my palm.
“Of course,” I said.
“Brush what is left,” she said, nodding toward the reflection. “Just so it feels clean.”
I stood behind her and brought the soft bristles down over the few silver strands at the back of her head.
The movement was slow and rhythmic, the brush sliding easily over her skin without any resistance.
Mason stood in the hallway, watching us through the open door with a quiet expression on his face.
He did not speak, but he reached out and touched the doorframe, his fingers resting against the painted wood.
