“Yes,” Mason said. “She has a very specific silk scarf she wants to wear for the photos, and we want to make sure the light catches it properly.”

Mr. Vance shook his head slowly, his pen hovering over the paper. He did not look up immediately, instead focusing on a small smudge on the corner of his desk.

“I am afraid that session has been marked off,” Mr. Vance said. “I received a call yesterday morning from Mrs. Miller herself.”

I leaned forward, my shoulder pressing against Mason’s arm, the gold ring cold against my skin.

“What do you mean, marked off?” I asked.

“She cancelled her individual portrait,” Mr. Vance said. “She was very clear about it, Clara. She told me to take her name off the single-subject roster for the twelfth.”

Mason’s hand stopped rubbing his collarbone. He leaned over the desk, his eyes wide.

“Did she give a reason?” Mason asked. “We paid the deposit for the full package last month, including her solo session.”
