Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

“What if I shaved it off, Clara? Before the ceremony. If she looks at the head table and sees me, she won’t feel like the only one in the room who is different.”

I looked at the peach towel hanging from the metal ring beside the sink, remembering the silver strands of hair I had found in the ivory brush under its folds. My hand went to my gold engagement ring, rolling it around my finger, round and round, until the metal grew hot against my skin.

“Well, you are a man, Mason,” I said softly. “People expect men to shave their heads. They do it for sports, or when their hair starts to thin. If you do it alone, it will just look like a style choice. It won’t stop people from staring at her.”

He turned away from the mirror, his shoulders dropping as he looked at me directly. “I know. But it is the only thing I can think of to do.”

“Well, you are not doing it alone,” I said.
