Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

She stiffened, her hand moving quickly to touch the knot of her headscarf.

“The catering company called me,” she said, her voice rising slightly. “They wanted to know if we should have the roasted chicken or the beef for the dinner.”

“We can talk about the menu later, Grandma,” Mason said. “We want to know how you are feeling.”

“I think the beef is much better for an autumn evening,” she said, her fingers tightening on her blanket. “People like a warm meal when the leaves start to fall.”

“Grandma, please,” Mason said.

“The wedding dinner is very important, Mason,” she said, looking directly at him. “You must have everything perfect for the guests on October twelfth.”

She stood up slowly, holding her blanket tightly around her shoulders.

“I need to go inside and start some tea for us,” she said, turning toward the back door.

We stood in the small hallway by the front door, the smell of lavender soap lingering in the drafty air.

The gold-framed mirror on the wall was covered in water spots, reflecting our three shadowed shapes in the dim light.
