Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

Evelyn tapped her fingers against her purse strap, which was draped over the back of her chair.

“You are creating drama out of nothing,” she said, picking up a silver seal. “We have three weeks to finish these programs, and I will not have this family dragged into unnecessary worry.”

“Why won’t you just call her doctor?” Mason asked.

“I speak to my mother every day, Mason,” she said. “She does not need you two hovering over her like crows.”

She set down the heavy card and looked at the pile of finished envelopes.

“If you continue to pressure her, she will not come to the wedding at all,” Evelyn said.

“Is that what she told you?” Mason asked.

Evelyn did not answer him. She picked up another invitation and began to fold the cream-colored flap.

The next morning, I drove to Elm Street alone, parking behind Maribel’s blue sedan, which had a layer of yellow maple leaves on the windshield. The grocery bags on my passenger seat contained fresh pears, a loaf of oat bread, and a small container of potato soup from the deli. When Maribel open the door, the smell of lavender soap was very strong, mixing with the damp air from the porch.
