“She said she was simplifying the day,” Mr. Vance said, closing the binder with a soft thud. “She told me she preferred to remain in the background, where the lighting was less direct and she would not be the focus of any single print.”

“Well, she did not mention this to us when we spoke yesterday,” I said.

“She was very firm,” Mr. Vance said, adjusting his glasses. “She told me she had no use for a formal picture of herself at this stage of her life, and she did not want us wasting time on it.”

He paused, looking at another slip of paper tucked into the back of our folder.

“Actually,” Mr. Vance said, “your mother, Evelyn, called as well. She wanted to make sure we did not spend too much time on the extended family portraits at the head table.”

Mason looked up, his brow furrowing. “My mother called about that?”

“She said we needed to keep the timeline tight,” Mr. Vance said, tapping his pen. “She suggested we focus on the wedding party and the couple, rather than the older relatives who might get tired.”
