Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

“I remember the way Maribel smelled of lavender when I was small,” Mason said, his fingers tracing the edge of the blue tub. “She used to make me toast with honey when I had a fever.”

“She has always been the anchor,” I said.

“And now the anchor is slipping,” Mason said.

Near the bottom of the box, tucked between a recipe booklet and a stack of yellowed letters, he found the small, square envelope. He pulled out a single glossy print and laid it on the table between us.

The photo showed a very young Mason, his front teeth missing, standing next to Maribel in front of a blue wooden cabin. Mason had a jagged, hairless gap where his left eyebrow should have been, the skin pink and bare. Beside him, Maribel was smiling, but her own left eyebrow was entirely gone, replaced by a clumsy, lopsided pencil line that she had drawn on with an eye pencil.

“I tried to cut my own bangs,” Mason said, his voice dropping as he stared at the print. “I ended up taking off my entire eyebrow right before school started.”
