Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

“But Grandma,” Mason said, his finger rising to touch his collarbone. “We planned those photos months ago. We want you in them.”

“It is already settled, Mason,” she said. “I have to go now. I will see you both at the shop tomorrow.”

The line went dead before Mason could argue, leaving only the quiet of our kitchen.

By eight the next morning, I was parked outside Evelyn’s house on the other side of town.

Evelyn opened the front door before I could even reach the top step of the porch.

“Clara, please come in,” Evelyn said, stepping back to let me into the entryway. “I was hoping we could talk before the appointments today.”

I followed her into the living room, where everything was in its perfect, traditional place.

“I wanted to apologize for how I spoke to you the other day,” Evelyn said, setting her coffee mug on a small ceramic coaster. “I was stressed about the rehearsal details, and I took it out on you. It was not fair.”

Well, she had never apologized to me so quickly before, and it made me feel a sudden wave of relief.
