Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

“Maribel is sitting at that table,” Mason said, his voice rising slightly before he caught himself.

“Well, your mother said the seating plan changed,” Chloe said, her voice dropping as she closed the binder. “She said the head table was only for the two of you now, and the others would be at the side tables.”

“We did not change the seating plan,” I said.

“I can only go by what the person paying the deposit tells us,” Chloe said, stepping back toward the back room where the roses were kept. “If you want to change it back, we need the balance paid by tomorrow morning.”

“How much is the balance?” Mason asked.

“Three hundred and eighty dollars,” Chloe said.

“We do not have that in the wedding account right now,” Mason said, looking at me.

“I will see what I can do,” I said, but my voice felt small against the heavy scent of the cut flowers.

The drive back to our apartment was done in a tense quiet, the only sound being the rattle of the old glove box latch.
