Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

I closed my eyes for a second, listening to the heavy fall of my own hair as it slid down my neck and pooled on the collar of my lace dress. It felt incredibly light, as if a weight I had been carrying for weeks was being sliced away with every pass of the blade.

“Open your eyes, Clara,” Mason said softly. “Look at me.”

I opened them, looking straight into his brown eyes. He was concentrated on his work, his brow furrowed slightly as he moved the clippers in a straight line back toward my crown.

Another long, dark clump of my hair slid down my arm, the silk threads catching on the lace of my sleeve before sliding to the floor.

Behind us, I heard the scraping of a chair. It was a sharp, dragging sound against the hardwood, but I did not turn to see who it was. I kept his focus on the small gold button on Mason’s vest, counting the threads that held it in place to keep my hands from trembling.
