Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception
“I am perfectly fine,” she said, without looking at the counter.
She adjusted her collar with trembling fingers, her eyes darting toward the sink where her dirty teacup sat.
She walked slowly toward the hallway, her fingers immediately reaching up to adjust the knot of her scarf. I followed her, stopping near the narrow wooden table where her keys sat in a small pewter dish.
On the wall hung the gold-framed mirror, its glass spotted with tiny water marks near the bottom edge. Maribel stood two feet away from it, her back turned completely to her own reflection.
“Well, the wedding is only four weeks away,” I said, keeping my voice soft. “I could come over next Saturday and help you style your hair, if you would like.”
Maribel stiffened, her shoulders rising slightly under her cardigan. She pulled the blue silk scarf tighter around her ears, tucking a loose corner deep into her collar.
“No,” she said. “No, thank you.”
“We could try something simple,” I said. “Just a few pins to keep it back.”
“I said no, Clara,” she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.
