Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

Maribel stopped two feet away from us, her eyes scanning my face and then Mason’s. She looked down at the dark hair scattered around our shoes, then back up at my bare scalp.
“Oh, my sweet children,” she whispered, her voice cracking slightly.
She reached out her right hand, her fingers warm and dry as she pressed her palm against the side of my head. The texture of her skin was rough and familiar, reminding me of the old ivory brush she had kept hidden under the peach towel in her bathroom, the brush we had both used for so many years.
“You never let me carry it alone, Grandma, and we are not letting you carry it alone either,” Mason said, his voice thick with emotion.
Maribel looked at him, her eyes shining with something that looked like immense relief. The shame that had kept her hidden in her cottage on Elm Street, the fear that had made her cancel her wedding portrait, seemed to lift from her shoulders right there on the dance floor.
