Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception
Mason was carrying a small wooden box under his arm. We had bought it at a local antique shop on Monday for twelve dollars, a solid oak box with a brass latch that closed with a heavy, satisfying click. Inside, wrapped in a clean hand towel, were the two electric clippers and their charging cords.
“We need a favor, Mrs. Gable,” I said, stepping closer to her.
“As long as it doesn’t involve moving the heavy planters,” she said, smiling slightly.
“We need to leave this box under the sweetheart table,” Mason said. He knelt down and showed her the brass latch. “We want to make sure it stays hidden under the white tablecloth until the dancing starts.”
Mrs. Gable looked at the box, then at me, her reading glasses slipping down her nose. “Is it a surprise for the guests?”
“Well, yes,” I said. “It is a surprise for Mason’s grandmother.”
“And my mother cannot know about it,” Mason added. “She is very particular about the schedule, and we don’t want her to worry.”
