Why Two Electric Hair Clippers Appeared on the Dance Floor at Our Reception

I rolled my gold engagement ring around my finger, feeling a small knot of tension loosen in my chest. “They looked beautiful on you, Maribel. I am so glad they arrived in time.”

“I feel much better now,” Maribel said. “Really, I do. It was silly of me to worry so much about how I looked.”

Mason smiled at me, his shoulders dropping an inch. “We just want you to feel comfortable, Grandma. That is the whole lesson of the day, looking at the broader context of the family.”

“Yes,” Maribel said. “But I do have one small favor to ask about the schedule.”

I leaned in, waiting for her to ask about the timing of the ceremony or the menu.

“I want you to tell the photographer to keep me out of the formal family portraits,” she said.

The kitchen went quiet, save for the hum of our old refrigerator.

“Just the official ones before the ceremony,” Maribel added quickly, her voice sounding breathless. “It will save so much time. You two should be the focus anyway.”
